The company encourages measures which promote recycling and reduced energy consumption. It is the company’s policy to:

  • minimise the extent of the environmental impact, where reasonably practicable.
  • conserve energy through minimising consumption and maximising efficiency.
  • promote efficient purchasing which will both minimise waste and allow materials to be recycled
  • adopt efficient waste-management strategies which reduce the amount of waste going to landfill or other disposal sites.
  • seek to minimise any emissions or effluents which may cause environmental damage.

Over the past 12 months, the company has worked on a number of initiatives supporting this area.


Reducing Energy Consumption

The company recognises that we have a responsibility for those resources which we use and that good environmental management is an essential part of being a responsible business.

Since March 2014, each pub has received a weekly carbon emissions report , detailing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by each pub, through energy usage and waste disposal, as well as the CO2 emission reduction through recycling. We also comply with the government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme.

The company also aims to implement processes and install equipment to minimise energy consumption when developing new pubs and/or refurbishing existing pubs.

Refrigerant emissions from our pubs are not reported as they are not material.


Waste and Recycling

We are committed to minimising waste and opting for recycling wherever possible.

Our target is to recycle 95% of recyclable waste.

The pubs and head office segregate waste into at least five areas; glass, tin, cooking oil, mixed recycling (paper, cardboard & plastic) and general waste.  Where possible, food waste is also separated and sent for anaerobic digestion.

The company has a dedicated distribution and recycling centre for food, some bottled drinks and non-consumable products. At the same time as making deliveries, the lorries collect mixed recycling, used cooking oil and tin for return to the recycling centre, creating a circular economy and reducing the company’s carbon footprint from reduced road miles.

This year we launched a brand-new and more environmentally friendly fleet of lorries to deliver food and drink from our central distribution centre to our pubs across the UK.

During the financial year 2015/16, the pubs recycled 10,051 tonnes of materials at our distribution centre, an increase of 354 tonnes or 3.6% on the previous year. This included; 6,258 tonnes of cardboard and paper (62.3%), 3,029 tonnes of cooking oil (30.1%), 587 tonnes of plastic (5.8%), 23 tonnes of aluminium (0.2%), and 154 tonnes of steel (1.5%). 

The rise has been down to significant increase in cardboard and paper recycling (635 tonnes / 11% increase YOY), along with aluminium (23 tonnes / 60% increase YOY). There have been reductions in the use and recycling of cooking oil (270 tonnes / 8% reduction YOY) and steel (36 tonnes / 19% reduction YOY).
